One family giving a hand up to others

Fundraiser Image One family, supporting other families through Opportunity International Australia... We would love you to partner us on our fundraising journey as we reach out to families in the poorest communities of South and Southeast Asia by supporting Opportunity International Australia.

Opportunity provide microfinance loans, giving mothers a hand-up and improving the opportunities they are able to provide for their families. Any amount can help, as donations combine together to make an incredible difference to people living in poverty. In countries like India, the Philippines and Indonesia, $70 can buy so much more than it can in Australia. In many cases, it is enough to start a small business – the loan sizes of Opportunity’s partners start even lower than this and can reach $1 000 for those on subsequent loan cycles. With over 98 per cent of loans being repaid, this truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

In addition to having supported Opportunity ourselves for many years, we have been involved also as Ambassadors for the past three years, arranging various fundraising activities. These have included renting out our upstairs room to AirBNB guests, with all accommodation fees donated to Opportunity International Australia and selling car parks to people attending the Royal Adelaide show. Kids have arranged Mulberry sales each October, with the people of Goodwood generously donating to our own little micro-enterprise, promoting "pick your own" experiences to passers-by on the way to the Farmers Market in Goodwood. We’ve hosted fundraising dinners - Malaysian noodles and Indian curries, and bit by bit, earned almost $12,000, to provide loans for 171 mothers in Asia and Southeast Asia. Independent to our family’s fundraising, David organised for two classes at St Thomas primary to participate in ‘Projec10', earning almost $900 from the kids’ micro-enterprises, to fund micro-loans for poor families in Asia.

We’re passionate about Opportunity and giving a hand-up to other families, to help them achieve their dreams. All donations to Opportunity via our webpage below are tax deductible. We’re thrilled to have raised this amount as Ambassadors, and really appreciate the support of friends and family for our fundraising for Opportunity.

Thank you to the friends, family, school friends, friends-of-friends and other friendly people who have supported us and brought us a step closer each time towards achieving our goals.

About Opportunity International Australia

Opportunity International Australia enables you to invest in a mother living in poverty so that she can use a small loan to buy an item like a sewing machine and start a small business. For a family who can’t afford the basics, a gift of $70 can be life changing. With this hand up, a mother can put food on the table, send her children to school and transform her family’s future for generations. Mothers want what is best for their children, and as businesses become successful (98% of Opportunity’s loans are repaid), your help means they can make their dreams for their children come true.
