Opportunity provides microfinance loans, giving mothers a hand-up and improving the life they are able to offer their families. Any amount can help, as donations combine together to make an incredible difference to people living in poverty. In countries like India, the Philippines and Indonesia, $70 can buy so much more than it can in Australia. In many cases, it is enough to start a small business. With over 98 per cent of loans being repaid, this truly is the gift that keeps on giving.
In addition to having supported Opportunity ourselves for many years, we have been involved also as Ambassadors since 2014, arranging various fundraising activities. These have included renting out our upstairs room to AirBNB guests, with all accommodation fees donated to Opportunity, and selling car parks and accommodation to people working at and attending the Royal Adelaide show. The kids have arranged mulberry sales in October, with the people of Goodwood generously donating to our own little micro-enterprise, promoting "pick your own" experiences to passers-by on the way to the Farmers Market in Goodwood. We've hosted fundraising dinners - Malaysian noodles and Indian curries, and bit by bit, earned and fundraised over $23,000. All this has been realised through the donations of many generous people! We are well on our way to reaching our goal of $25,000, which is significant, indicating we will have impacted up to 357 families through providing loans to mothers in Asia and Southeast Asia. With an average family size of five people, this means over 1,785 individuals will have benefited from having access to finance when we reach this goal.
Supporting Opportunity is something our whole family is involved with. We started fundraising together when our eldest son commented that 'we don't give enough money to poor people', and we realised we needed to be more visibly engaged in Opportunity, so that the children could be involved in helping those less fortunate than themselves. Independent to our family's fundraising (and without us parents knowing), our middle son organised for two classes at St Thomas primary to participate in 'Projec10', earning almost $900 from the kids' micro-enterprises, to fund micro-loans for families living in poverty in Asia. All three kids spruik at the front of our house during the Adelaide Show for car parking and in mulberry season, and by giving their time and effort, are themselves engaged in fundraising to help other families in other parts of the world.
We're passionate about Opportunity and giving a hand-up to other families, to help them achieve their dreams. All donations of $2 or more to Opportunity via our webpage are tax-deductible (look for the grey box 'Enter your gift amount' on the right hand side, then click 'add gift'). We're thrilled to have raised this amount as Ambassadors, and really appreciate the supporter of friends and family for our fundraising for Opportunity.
So, thank you to our friends, family, school friends, friends-of-friends and all others who have supported us in our fundraising journey and brought us a step closer each time towards achieving our goals.
About Opportunity International Australia
Opportunity International Australia enables you to invest in a mother living in poverty so that she can use a small loan to buy an item like a sewing machine and start a small business. For a family who can’t afford the basics, a gift of $70 can be life changing. With this hand up, a mother can put food on the table, send her children to school and transform her family’s future for generations. Mothers want what is best for their children, and as businesses become successful (98% of Opportunity’s loans are repaid), your help means they can make their dreams for their children come true.
