Families who live on less than US$1.90 a day are trapped in a cycle of extreme poverty. They live in unsafe shelter, lack jobs and assets and often don’t even know where their next meal is coming from. You can help give families in extreme poverty the tools they need to start a business – as well as the training and mentoring they need to make that business a success. To a family in extreme poverty, a ‘business kit’ such as seeds to grow a vegetable farm or stock to start a grocery stall can be the building blocks of a whole new future.
About this project
Marilyn lives in a humble shelter in the Philippines with her husband and children. Without any assets to help her earn an income and no regular employment, Marilyn struggled to feed her family each day, let alone pay for her children to go to school.
But then Opportunity provided Marilyn with stock to open her own sari sari store (small grocery store). Today, Marilyn uses her income to feed her children two nutritious meals a day and send them to school. She hopes to soon receive her own small loan to grow her business even more, continuing her family’s journey out of poverty.
Your Support Will Help• Provide ‘business kits’ to families in extreme poverty
• Give much-needed training and mentoring to help make these businesses a success
• Families afford food, shelter, clean water and other basic necessities.
THE IMPACT SO FARWe’re currently working with close to 500 families in the northern Philippines, exploring the best ways to help families grow sustainable livelihoods and leave poverty behind. Give families in extreme poverty the tools they need to build a whole new future.
Funding will be directed to the area of greatest need within the proposed program. Sometimes programs may change in scope and in this case, Opportunity may redirect funding to a suitable alternative program.
